October 2015 - GBS moves onto next phase of Miller Heysham contract

GBS is moving onto the new phase of works at Heysham for Miller Homes. This is the last phase on what has been a long and successful site for Miller. The final 20 plots are positioned in the old Miller works compound area off Mossgate Park and will make a aesthetically pleasing cul de sac with good access when complete.

October 2015 - GBS tendering for future works

Having spent a number of months with a full order book, GBS is now developing its 2016 business plan and identifying scope for further works in the period as some existing contracts come to a close. The company has consolidated much of its resources on some large, long term contracts for existing clients in 2015 but has plenty of scope for further contracts as some smaller contracts come to completion.

The company has an appetite for further contracts in both West and North Cumbria, and in the Lancashire area. In the lead up to Christmas the management are hoping to secure a number of contracts, in particular in Carlisle, Workington, Chorley and Leyland.

The company is predominantly working on new housebuilding developments as the housebuilding and house sales market remains strong. In addition to housebuilding, the company has recently opened negotiations with Carillion on its large utilities infrastructure and the company has not hidden its desire to become further involved in the existing and new build nuclear works on the west coast and continues to work with its stakeholders.

August 2015 - GBS further strengthens relationship with Persimmon Homes

GBS has this month been awarded the prestigious development in Penrith for Persimmon Homes Lancashire. The development, named Carleton Heights, is a huge development in Penrith with the aniticpation of some 500 houses being built over a number of planned phases.

Such was the evidence of the requirement for housing in Penrith was the selling out of phase one (some 55 houses) within a matter of weeks of releasing them for reservation.

In addition to Penrith, GBS was also this month awarded the Launds Fields development in Galgate, Lancashire. This 50-home development is in the ideal location, with Lancaster University just a stones throw away and easy access to the M6 transport link.

August 2015 - GBS appoints Operations Manager

As the company continues to grow, GBS has increased its management capability by appointing its first Operations Manager. Paul Harkness has joined the company this month in the role and has stated how excited he is by the challenge: ‘When I read the new role job description I knew it was a role which would be both challenging and satisfying. I am thrilled that GBS have appointed me to this role and look forward to a long and successful future with the company as it looks to complete existing contracts and strengthen existing clients relations. One of the big pulls about coming to GBS was the image of the company and its huge ambitions to break into other construction sectors, such as the nuclear and utilities contracts coming to the north west in future years.’   

Paul will be responsible for the day-to-day delivery of GBS contracts with the assistance of Contracts Managers: James Parr and Steve Thompson.

July 2015 - Further contracts received from Story Homes at High Wood

Infrastructure works are the latest works to be awarded to GBS by Story Homes at their High Wood development. A footpath link connecting the main entrance, looping the existing former Lancaster Moor Hospital building currently being renovated to high spec apartments by PJ Livesey, and connecting the new housebuilding area are set to start this month. The footpath works in particular bring a number of challenges with sweeping site levels and obstacles and a number of areas requiring street lighting and the installation of precast concrete stairways.

June 2015 - Prestigious Cockermouth development awarded to GBS

Thomas Armstrong has awarded GBS with the contract to undertake the full roads, sewers, and plotworks on their executive 15 plot development on Brigham Road, Cockermouth. This is another contract currently being undertaken for Thomas Armstrong with the Woodville Park and Wentworth Park developments in Cockermouth and Workington respectively going along at a rapid rate of works.

GBS is hoping to add further contracts with Thomas Armstrong late in 2015 at Harrington and Brigham.

May 2015 - Congratulations to GBS Apprentices on completion of their NVQ

Congratulations to GBS employees Kieran Birkett and Tyler Wilson who have recently completed their two year groundwork apprenticeship with the company. Kieran and Tyler attended Lakes College at Workington one day per week over the two year period and have come through their NVQ with flying colours.

Darrin Richardson, CITB Apprenticeship Officer, commented: ‘Both lads should be proud of their achievements with excellent attendance records and attention to detail in their coursework. I am sure they will have a long and successful career ahead of them at GBS.’

Kieran Birkett further advanced his qualifications with the undertaking of CPCS Excavator 360 training and has expressed a desire to continue with his plant training in the future.

January 2015 - Story Homes awards GBS with first Lancashire contract

GBS is delighted to have been awarded the Phase Two roads and sewers contract on the High Wood development for Story Homes in Lancaster. High Wood is the first contract received from Story Homes in Lancashire. GBS will be hoping to build on the strong relationship formed whilst undertaking the current Cumbrian contracts at Waters Edge, Whitehaven and The Meadows, Lazonby. 

January 2015 - GBS appoints Quantity Surveyor, Wendy Parry

GBS is pleased to announce the appointment of Wendy Parry. Wendy joins the company in the role of Quantity Surveyor and will be responsible for the commercial management of GBS contracts in North Cumbria and Lancashire. Wendy comes from a strong groundwork and civils background, with her services being employed at Morgan Sindall, Network Rail and Hanson Contracting previously.

November 2014 - GBS awarded second Miller Homes Contract

GBS has been awarded the full site clearance, roads, sewers and plotworks on the 71 plot site named The Potteries in Lancaster. The Potteries is set within the grounds of Lancaster Leisure Park and brings another attractive and much sought after development to Lancaster. Lancaster has seen an influx of development in recent months, much demanded with the investment in the local infrastructure with the Lancatser to Heysham bypass and the ongoing potential investment in nuclear energy at Heysham Power Plant.

October 2014 - GBS recruiting Technical Manager

October 2014 – GBS tendering for works across Cumbria and Lancashire

The construction industry shows no signs of slowing down as the GBS office continues to receive invitations to tender for various works across the counties.

GBS are currently tendering for works in Cockermouth, Penrith and numerous developments in Lancaster. We hope to report more news on these opportunities soon.

October 2014 – GBS commences works on second Story Homes site

Following the ongoing success of works at Story Homes site; The Meadows, Lazonby, GBS has been awarded the contract at the new development; Waters Edge, Whitehaven.

The works comprise the full package of roads, sewers, off site connections and plotworks for 40 plots.

September 2014 – GBS’ relationship with Thomas Armstrong Construction continues to grow

Due to strong sales on the Thomas Armstrong sites GBS has been met with and increased workload and challenging programme changes and has continued to meet the clients requirements.

GBS are currently working on three contracts for the client in Stainburn, Cockermouth and Ambleside.

September 2014 – GBS Property Services commences conversion of historic barn

One of the first major contracts awarded to GBS Property Services is a Cockermouth barn conversion. Previously used as a tannery the building requires extensive works to develop the barn into a four bedroom dwelling.

Works are expected to be complete in approximately four months.

August 2014 – Event to celebrate 20 years of trading

On Saturday 30 August 2014, GBS attended Cockermouth Rugby Club as match sponsors and held an employee event to celebrate 20 years of trading. Food and drinks were enjoyed by employees and their families and a number of service awards were given.

To mark the special year items of commemorative clothing have been produced for employees and the company has a new 20 year logo design.

June 2014 – GBS commences works at Story Homes site in Lazonby

Having been awarded the full groundworks package, GBS has commenced works at the Story Homes site, The Meadows.

Situated in the sought after village of Lazonby, the prestigious development comprises 48 homes.

The works to be undertaken by Paul Jeffrey of GBS and his team include: earthworks, roads and sewers, culvert, and all plotworks.

June 2014 – Contracts Supervisor appointed to oversee Lancashire contracts

GBS has appointed James Parr as Contracts Supervisor.

James has been introduced by the company to oversee contracts in Lancashire and South Lakes and brings a wealth of experience from his previous role on construction works at Salford’s Media City.

May 2014 – GBS appointed on prestigious Charles Church site in Carlisle

GBS has been appointed by Persimmon subsidiary, Charles Church, at their prestigious housing development, Clover Fields, Carlisle.

GBS will be undertaking all plotworks for the 103 dwellings, the team will be under the stewardship of Richard Harrison.

May 2014 - GBS commences first contract for Miller Homes

GBS has commenced work for Miller Homes at Millers Green, Mossgate Park, Heysham.

Working on phase six of the development, Arnold Duckworth and Dave Kitchen of GBS are leading the team on the 52 plotworks. 

The commencement of this contract followed on from the completion of five successful years on the Persimmon Homes, Meadows Reach site. Closing works involved joint works for Miller Homes and Persimmon Homes to create SUDS infiltration blanket and balancing ponds for the Millers Green and Meadows Reach surface water masterplan.

We hope this contract will be the start of a long and successful relationship with Miller Homes.

April 2014 - GBS appoints Commercial Manager

GBS welcomes Shawn Ackerlay to the team in the role of Commercial Manager.

Shawn, who leaves AMEC after eight years as Quantity Surveyor, joins GBS to lead commercial operations in Cumbria and Lancashire.

Nicky Gordon, Managing Director at GBS, commented: “We are pleased to announce the appointment of Shawn, bringing a wealth of experience and commercial awareness, he is a valuable asset to the organisation. “

February 2014 - GBS secures four new contracts

2014 continues to progress at a fast pace with four new contracts for GBS.
Two contracts have been awarded by Persimmon Homes; GBS will undertake roads, sewers and 37 plots at Teasdale Place in Carlisle, with a second contract at Bellaport Gardens, Harrington on roads, sewers and initial plots.
A further two contracts awarded by Thomas Armstrong Construction at Stainburn and Ambleside comprises plotworks on 22 large prestige houses at Wentworth Park, Stainburn and a smaller development at Waterside Close, Ambleside, where GBS will undertake plotworks on 12 large prestige houses.
Nicky Gordon, Managing Director, commented: "We have really hit the ground running from the start of 2014, to be awarded four new contracts in the space of four weeks is a promising start, we are pleased to see the housebuilders have a confidence in the housing market in Cumbria and we look forward to meeting the demands that lie ahead."
Other tender submissions include four new developments set to begin in the first quarter of 2014.

February 2014 - A promising start to the year for GBS

GBS continues its growth plans with increased plant acquisitions and a recruitment drive.
We have this month increased our plant fleet size to 23 with the acquisition of a new Kubota U55-4, a Hyundai R25, a Hyundai R145LCR and three Terex 6t Dumpers. We have also added a Ford Ranger to the commercial fleet range to add extra diversity to our ability.
We have increased our employee numbers to over 50 in January, with a further recruitment drive expected this month to meet the increased work demands.
A highly promising start to 2014.

January 2014 - 20th year of trading for GBS Ltd

2014 sees the start of GBS Ltd's 20th year of trading, there will be a series of celebrations planned to mark this special year.

The first of the events will see GBS attend the 'Touch a Truck' event in Cockermouth in May. A range of machinery will be on display where we hope to engage with employees and clients as well as the general public.

A Summer BBQ event will see GBS employees past and present get together to celebrate, this will also be an opportunity for Management to thank the employees for the part they have played in the Company's success.

Plans are also being made by GBS Management for a series of charity events to raise money and awareness for a selected charity.

December 2013 - GBS on track for completion at Stanwix Medical Centre

GBS heads into 2014 on track for completion at the busy F Parkinson Ltd site in Stanwix. The new build health centre has provided many challenges and the GBS team on the ground have shown great commitment to the project, their continued hard work has ensured another successful completion to programme for GBS.

November 2013 - GBS provides expertise on Charles Church Development, Fulwood

GBS has been appointed to provide specialist works on the Charles Church development, Monarchs Chase, Fulwood. Works have commenced to install two metre high gabion baskets to create a 220 metre long boundary between the development and the bordering motorway slip road.

October 2013 - GBS appointed on second contract with Esh Property Services

Following the first appointment at Borland Avenue, Esh Property Services have awarded GBS a second contract at Arnside Court, Carlisle. The social housing development will provide 11 new affordable properties in the area and is expected to be completed mid 2014.

September 2013 - GBS commences works for Thomas Armstrong in Cockermouth

GBS have commenced works on the Woodville Park development in Cockermouth. The site, located on Sullart Street, comprises 85 dwellings of various sizes. Initial interest suggests it will be a popular development, the first completitions are due early 2014.

August 2013 - GBS awarded Barratt Homes, Lune Mills Development, Lancaster

GBS is delighted to have been awarded the plotwork groundworks package on the 214 plot Lune Mills development for Barratt Homes on New Quay Road, Lancaster.

The full supply and fix package provides GBS with a long term workload in the Lancaster area and provides confidence of securing more work in the Lancashire area off the back of this contract win.

The works are set to commence late in August 2013. GBS will have a team of 12 people working on the project which is expected to last in excess of five years.

July 2013 - GBS wins Social Housing Contract in Carlisle

GBS has been chosen as the contractor for the demolition and groundworks package to demolish eleven existing social houses and build 11 new modern social houses on Borland Avenue in Carlisle, for ESH Property Services.

This is GBS’s first contract with ESH and we will be looking to develop this relationship during the project.

Works are due to commence at the beginning of August and last approximately 17 weeks.

July 2013 - Employee of the Month

July’s Employee of the Month award goes to Ryan Wilson. Ryan has developed into an integral member of the GBS team on the incredibly busy Persimmon - Brackenleigh site in Carlisle and over the last few months has shown his range of skills in bricklaying, paving, and drainage.

Highly Commended for July goes to Andy Bagley for his attitude and commitment whilst working alone at Meadows Reach, Heysham during holiday cover.

July 2013 - GBS successfully meets June completions

GBS is pleased to report it has successfully achieved the targets set on all sites for the June completions. Employees have been commended for their consistent hard work and commitment to ensure the targets were met.

June 2013 - Employee of the Month

Employee of the Month for June is awarded to Steven Thompson, Site Supervisor, for his work at the Barratt Homes site, The Looms, Frizington. Steven has worked hard to put his own stamp on the job after taking it on mid-way through and at a time of high workload and demand.

The employee who is Highly Commended this month is Mark Ward for continually meeting the demands of the busy Persimmon Homes site, Brackenleigh.

June 2013 - GBS Commences Work for Parkinson at Stanwix Medical Centre, Carlisle

GBS has commenced work on their first project with Parkinson at Stanwix Medical Centre, Carlisle. The project comprises a new build health centre and surgery combining three local GP Practices.

The 823sqm building has a build value of £2.2m and is due for completion in early 2014.

GBS has worked tirelessly to assist the Client and Parkinson with value engineering methods on the job, assisting in the modification and design of the drainage scheme on the job to ensure efficiency and cost savings.
